50 years ago Saint Mary’s University Art Gallery was launched and so was Apollo 14! Alan Shepard played golf on the moon and the astronauts collected 94 pounds of rock and, according to artist Mitchell Wiebe, also attracted one big cat!

50 years ago the floppy disc came out! IBM’s “Minnow” was a flexible, portable disk with a whopping 80KB capacity! (Fortnite would require 212,500 floppy disks) This incredible invention was the equivalent of 3000 punch cards. A giant time-saver for computer enthusiasts a half-century ago. Not to be outdone, the world's first microprocessor also debuted in 1971.

Thanks to Mitchell Wiebe for this illustration!

Although Barbie, the iconic fashion doll named after its creator's daughter, was born in 1959, she didn't go to Malibu until 1971. She hit the beach with a baby blue tricot suit, a yellow beach towel and long, long hair! (Malibu Ken, with bendable legs, sold separately) Dig it, while she was catching some rays on the Pacific something groovy was happening that very same year on the Atlantic...Saint Mary's University Art Gallery was established! Happy Anniversary to us both and thanks to Adam Myatt for this ginchiest of illustrations!

Another tasty participant in our 50th anniversary celebration is McDonald’s quarter pounder. An ordinary concept: 4 ounces of beef with ketchup, mustard, onions, dill pickles, on a sesame seed bun, but with the help of a catchy theme song and you get extra-ordinary!  True story: A&W tried to grab some of that thirsty McDonald’s crowd in ‘80’s by introducing its third pound burger at the same price as the quarter pounder.  To their dismay the majority of folks thought a third was smaller than a quarter and didn’t want to pay more for less!  Thanks to Adam Myatt for this juicy illustration.

Okay, actually it was EMAIL that turns 50 in 2021. The MIT graduate, Ray Tomlinson developed a program for sending mail, get this, electronically, with a software program called “SNDMSG.” He’s also responsible for making @ possibly the most important symbol of our age. Thanks to James Kirkpatrick for this illustration!

Seven years after Roald Dahl published Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the film adaptation arrived on screen to be followed later by two additional versions. Gene Wilder as Mr. Wonka set a pretty high bar….. Thanks again to James Kirkpatrick for this sweet treat of an image!

Oh yes! Our fave and yours STARBUCKS also turning 50 in 2021. Artist James Kirkpatrick comes through again with a winner of an illustration!

Last but certainly not least, THE PRICE IS RIGHT shares our anniversary! Can’t help but smile along with Bob and the contestant “SMU”! Thanks again James Kirkpatrick!
